BMW
From September 2001, BMW started fitting the same radio for all worldwide markets. The radio can be changed from one market are to another by accessing the radio's Service Mode. The means of accessing the Service Mode varies from radio to radio.
Accessing Service Mode for radio type C53/CD53 (without Multi-Info Display "MID", or TV screen) as fitted to E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E53 (X5), E83 (X3) or E85 (Z4)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'M' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the '+' and '-' keys or the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.
Turn the radio off to exit the service mode and store the settings.

Accessing Service Mode for radio type C53/CD53 (with Central Information Display "CID", or TV screen) E83 (X3) or E85 (Z4)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'SEL' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the '+' and '-' keys or the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.

Accessing Service Mode for radio type C53/CD53 (with MIR Multi-Information Radio) E52 (Z8)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'SEL' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the '+' and '-' keys or the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.

Accessing Service Mode for small-screen (4:3) on-board monitor with radio type BM53/BM54 as fitted to E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E53 (X5)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'RDS' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.
Turn the radio off to exit the service mode and store the settings.

Accessing Service Mode for wide-screen (16:9) on-board monitor with radio type BM53/BM54 prior to Sept 2001 as fitted to E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E53 (X5)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press the 'INFO' button.
Select RDS or PTY (displayed option depends on market).
Press and hold the 'On-Board Monitor rotary control knob for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.
Turn the radio off to exit the service mode and store the settings.

Accessing Service Mode for wide-screen (16:9) on-board monitor with radio type BM53/BM54 after Sept 2001 as fitted to E38 (7 Series), E39 (5 Series), E46 (3 Series), E53 (X5)

Turn the radio on.
Straight away, press and hold the 'SELECT' button for at least 8 seconds.
Scroll through functions using the "< >" buttons.
Change settings using the 1...6 buttons.
Turn the radio off to exit the service mode and store the settings.

The Service Mode settings are:

Software version: radio software yersion (week/year/version)
GAL: speed sensitive volume, 1=min effect, 6=max effect. No effect if DSP fitted.
F/Q: Field strenght and Quality. F1=min, F15=max. Q1=min, Q15=max.
DSP: shows 1 if DSP detected and working, otherwise 0.
TP Volume: Traffic Announcement volume level.
AF: Alternative Frequency (part of RDS service). Best set to Auto.
Index: Revision index.
Area: Market area. This is the setting to change when changing from Japanese to any other area.
